What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services across India. It replaced a complex web of older indirect taxes — including VAT (Value Added Tax), Central Excise Duty, Service Tax, Entry Tax, and Octroi — with a unified single tax structure.

GST was introduced in India on July 1, 2017, under the Constitutional Amendment Act of 2016. It follows the principle of "one nation, one tax," making the Indian taxation system more transparent, efficient, and business-friendly. GST is administered jointly by the Central Government and the State Governments.

Every business with an annual turnover exceeding ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh for special category states) must register for GST and collect GST from customers on behalf of the government. As a consumer, GST is always included in the final price of most products and services you buy in India.

How to Calculate GST – Formula

There are two scenarios for GST calculation:

1. Adding GST (GST-Exclusive to GST-Inclusive)

When you know the original price (before GST) and want to find the final price including GST:

GST Amount = Original Price × (GST Rate / 100) Final Price = Original Price + GST Amount CGST Amount = GST Amount / 2 SGST Amount = GST Amount / 2

📌 Example — Adding 18% GST

Given: Original Price = ₹1,000 | GST Rate = 18%

GST Amount = ₹1,000 × 18/100 = ₹180

Final Price = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180

CGST (9%) = ₹90 | SGST (9%) = ₹90

2. Removing GST / Reverse GST (GST-Inclusive to GST-Exclusive)

When you know the GST-inclusive price (the MRP with GST already included) and want to find the original price:

Original Price = GST-Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate / 100) GST Amount = GST-Inclusive Price − Original Price CGST Amount = GST Amount / 2 SGST Amount = GST Amount / 2

📌 Example — Removing 18% GST (Reverse Calculation)

Given: GST-Inclusive Price = ₹1,180 | GST Rate = 18%

Original Price = ₹1,180 ÷ (1 + 18/100) = ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000

GST Amount = ₹1,180 − ₹1,000 = ₹180

CGST (9%) = ₹90 | SGST (9%) = ₹90

What is CGST and SGST?

Under India's dual GST structure, the tax collected on intra-state transactions (transactions within the same state) is split equally into two components:

  • CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) — Collected by the Central Government. It is exactly half of the applicable GST rate. For 18% GST, CGST = 9%.
  • SGST (State Goods and Services Tax) — Collected by the State Government where the sale takes place. It is also exactly half of the applicable GST rate. For 18% GST, SGST = 9%.

For inter-state transactions (between two different states), IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax) applies at the full rate, and it is collected by the Central Government. This calculator shows CGST and SGST for intra-state supplies, which is the most common use case for individuals and businesses.

GST Calculator – Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about GST calculation in India.

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It is a comprehensive, destination-based, multi-stage indirect tax introduced in India on July 1, 2017. GST replaced multiple old taxes like VAT, Central Excise Duty, Service Tax, Entry Tax, and Octroi, simplifying the entire indirect tax system into "one nation, one tax."
To calculate 18% GST on ₹1,000:

GST Amount = ₹1,000 × 18/100 = ₹180
Final Price = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180
CGST (9%) = ₹90 | SGST (9%) = ₹90

Use the calculator above to compute this instantly for any amount.
Reverse GST (also called GST-exclusive calculation) is used when you already know the GST-inclusive price (e.g., the MRP on a product) and want to find:
• The original price before GST was added
• The exact GST amount embedded in the price

Formula: Original Price = Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate/100)
Example: ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 original price. GST = ₹180.
India has a dual GST system. For intra-state transactions (within the same state):
CGST (Central GST) = Half of the GST rate — collected by the Central Government
SGST (State GST) = Half of the GST rate — collected by the State Government

For example, on 18% GST: CGST = 9%, SGST = 9%. For inter-state transactions, only IGST (Integrated GST) at the full rate applies.
The 28% GST slab is the highest slab and covers luxury and sin goods, including:
• Passenger cars and motorcycles
• Cigarettes, bidis, tobacco products
• Aerated drinks and carbonated beverages
• Cement, paints (above a threshold)
• Air conditioners, large-screen televisions
• Washing machines and dishwashers
• Casinos, race clubs, online gaming (at full face value)

Additionally, a Cess is levied on top of the 28% rate on some of these luxury goods.
No. Some goods and services are exempt from GST (0% slab), including:
• Fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, rice, wheat, bread, salt
• Healthcare services (hospital services, ambulance)
• Educational services (school, college tuition)
• Postal services by the government
• Some financial services

Additionally, alcohol for human consumption, petroleum products (petrol, diesel, ATF, natural gas, crude oil), and electricity are currently outside the GST ambit.
